Each year our chapter members participate in the events surrounding National History Day by supporting events in local District 4, traveling to the Virginia State History Day Competition and sponsoring local winners at the National History Day Contest held every summer in College Park, MD.
This year the Col. James Wood, II Chapter sponsored Miss Abby Grant, District 4 Winner in the Senior Paper Category. A student at Sherando High School in Stephens City, Virginia, Miss Grant authored an award winning paper on Congressional Medal of Honor Winner Desmond Doss, a Virginia native and medic in the Pacific War Theater during World War II.
Miss Grant gave us her award winning presentation at our May 27th Chapter Meeting. President Rob Andrews presented her with a Certificate of Appreciation, a CJW II Chapter Coffee Mug and a scholarship of $200.
ABOUT NATIONAL HISTORY DAY
Each year more than half a million students participate in the National History Day Contest. Students choose a historical topic related to the annual theme, and then conduct primary and secondary research. You will look through libraries, archives and museums, conduct oral history interviews, and visit historic sites. After you have analyzed and interpreted your sources, and have drawn a conclusion about the significance of your topic, you will then be able to present your work in one of five ways: as a paper, an exhibit, a performance, a documentary, or a website.
