Your Path to Membership

Discover your Revolutionary roots.
Carry their legacy forward.

Connect with a chapter dedicated to history, education, patriotism, and service in the Northern Shenandoah Valley.

Begin Your Membership Inquiry

You do not need a completed application to contact us.

From Family History to Fellowship

Four steps to begin your SAR journey, with guidance along the way.

STEP 01

Explore Your Eligibility

SAR membership is open to males of good character who document direct descent from a qualifying Revolutionary War Patriot. A Patriot may be a man or woman, and qualifying service extends beyond military duty.

Membership is not restricted by race, color, religion, national origin, citizenship, or residency. Read the eligibility guidance (PDF).

STEP 02

Meet Your Chapter

Start with our membership inquiry form. Share what you already know about your family and, if known, the name of your Patriot ancestor.

Our chapter serves Clarke, Frederick, Page, Shenandoah, and Warren counties and the City of Winchester.

STEP 03

Gather Your Records

Build a documented connection from yourself through each generation to your Patriot. Birth, marriage, death, census, probate, and other records may help establish the line.

A relative’s SAR, DAR, or C.A.R. application can provide a starting point. Your chapter contact can help identify the evidence still needed.

STEP 04

Prepare Your Application

Work with your chapter contact to complete the application and assemble supporting documents. The application proceeds through chapter, state, and national review.

Ask about current fees, regular and junior membership, and family applications. Review Virginia SAR’s application guidance.

Not Sure Where to Begin?

Tell us what you know. An incomplete family tree is a reason to start a conversation.

A Helpful First Checklist

  • Write down names, dates, and places for yourself, your parents, and grandparents.
  • Gather family records you already have.
  • Note relatives who belonged to SAR, DAR, or C.A.R.
  • Bring questions for your chapter contact before ordering additional records.

Keep original records safe. Use the inquiry form to introduce yourself; arrange with your chapter contact how to share supporting documents.
